These can feature in a number of different locations such as on a ramp or a raised platform or other surfaces such as scaffolding. These toe boards act as a barrier to prevent objects or people from falling. For example to stop a mug spilling onto a platform below, a person falling off the edge of a ramp and also as an aid to keep walkways free from obstacles.
