The backlight is one part of ‘three-point lighting’. It is placed behind the subject, opposite the camera but high above it so that none of the light glares directly into the camera.

The backlight highlights the edges of the subject so they do not blend in to the background.
A strong backlight also creates a halo-effect around the subject.
