Background Noise

When filming actors dialogue, additional sounds are recorded separately to accompany the original action. For example, a glass being placed on a table, doors closing, the radio, music and chatter.  This sound would be played back at a reduced volume in comparison to that of the main dialogue.  Sounds of nature could also be recorded such as beach sounds and birdsong. These sounds, referred to as ‘atmos’ help create an atmosphere and are recorded for 30 seconds at a time.
