Average Shot Length

The average shot length (ASL) gives an approximate idea of how long each shot of a film lasts. To calculate the ASL you need to divide the total length of the film by the total number of shots.

For example, a modern action film would have a low ASL of about 3 seconds, which reflects the fast-paced action.
